Obama raises U.S. focus on fighting AIDS

Progress is a great thing - who can argue with the benefits that come from medical advances in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. So, what's the bad news? It seems that a growing number of people and their governments are becoming complacent - reducing their focus on this important health issue.

To counter the "all is well" attitude, President Obama recently renewed the U.S. commitment to increase national focus on HIV/AIDS education, prevention, and treatment. "We can beat this disease. We can win this fight. We just have to keep at it, today, tomorrow, and every day until we get to zero," Obama said at the recent World AIDS Day forum. "As we go forward, we need to keep refining our strategy so that we're saving as many lives as possible. We need to listen when the scientific community focuses on prevention," Obama said.

He announced a $50 million increase in spending on HIV and AIDS treatment in the United States, where only 28 percent of the 1.2 million Americans living with the infection have it under control, according to health officials. What's worse, it is estimated that over 20% of people who are HIV positive don't even know they are infected. This is why getting tested is so critical - the only way to know if you are HIV Positive - or if you have any other STD - is to get tested.

Getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, is easier and more convenient than ever before.
